so this what
freshmen dream about.
forget
bodies, futures, a love of your life,
all they
want is to leave out the middle term.
in other
words, they want it easy --
the thrill
of the beginning,
the glory of
the end without
the trudging
through the thicket.
soon they
will learn the merits
of foiling. elusive
and real.
(first,
outside, inside, last.)
for now it just looks good
they might
say or makes sense to me.
but there is
no trick to being wrong.
the joy is
in the journey and the rest
of that
bullshit is true. the rules help
when they
help, if you use them.
it’s nearly
golden and it’s the simplest
solution out
there.
